itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Recent breakthroughs have led to creating true quantum states of solid-state mechanical objects. Using <strong>cavity optomechanics, quantum acoustics, and nano-electro-mechanics<\/strong>, we will develop <strong>new protocols for sensing<\/strong> that make use of the unique properties of these states.<\/p>\n<p>While quantum limits to noise and sensitivity have long been an important consideration in optomechanical sensors, we aim to make use of distinctly quantum properties such as non-Gaussianity, multi-mode entanglement, and single-phonon nonlinearities to enhance the performance of these systems.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, analogously to what has long been done in atomic or spin-based sensors, we will explore using <strong>quantum states<\/strong> as a new resource for enhancing the capabilities of <strong>mechanical sensors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" id=\"style-css-av-l1l52982-4962b385e32e31e6be44f6a5e96fcdab\">\n#top .av_textblock_section.av-l1l52982-4962b385e32e31e6be44f6a5e96fcdab .avia_textblock{\ncolor:#363e6d;\n}\n<\/style>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-l1l52982-4962b385e32e31e6be44f6a5e96fcdab'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock av_inherit_color'  itemprop=\"text\" ><h2>GOALS<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-2bxbuv-ba4f7c13573a020e190702887abbe22a'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>The goal of this project is to establish the usefulness of <strong>quantum states for mechanical sensing<\/strong> through <strong>new theoretical developments<\/strong> and <strong>experimental demonstrations<\/strong> in <strong>three<\/strong> complimentary <strong>physical platforms<\/strong>: high-overtone bulk acoustic wave resonators (HBARs), membrane resonators, and carbon nanotubes.<\/p>\n<p>We will begin by addressing three outstanding goals in the field: creating complex non-classical states of motion such as Schr\u00f6dinger cat states, using feedback to stabilize squeezed and entangled mechanical states, and realizing a mechanical qubit. Achieving these goals will require us to advance the performance of all three mechanical systems and develop new theoretical ideas for dissipation engineering and quantum control.<\/p>\n<p>We will then use these capabilities to explore new protocols for quantum-enhanced measurements of force and frequency.
